a nonprofit organization run by FM Global (FM), is the research and testing arm of FM Global, the worldâs largest industrial and commercial property insurance organization. FMR provides testing and approvals for products used in the construction of FM insured properties.

One item considered by FMR is roof coverings, as set forth in FM4470 Approval standard for Class 1 roof covers. This can include materials used in the original construction as well as those used later to recover the roof. The products are tested for fire, hail, wind uplift, foot traffic as well as water leakage.

FMR requires that manufacturers seeking approval for products or systems must submit to regular audits at their facilities by FMR. This insures that proper quality control, marking and labeling, and procedures continue to be followed as set forth by FMR. In addition, a given approved product must have satisfactory field performance over time.

If a product and its manufacturer meet all of these criteria the product and its method of application are considered to be approved and are listed as such in FMRâs approval guide. The products can, and must, bear FMR approval labels.

One important point to consider is that an approval differs from acceptance. An approval indicates that a given approved product has been tested and can be considered for use in any case where the job criteria complies with the approved product. An acceptance simply means that a singular project has been given the okay for the use of a given product(s) in that particular case only. In other words, an approved product and process can be used anytime as long as the job requirements are addressed in the approval. SUNLIFE Systems has such approvals for its products and systems that apply to built up, metal and single ply (EPDM) roofs.
