ASTM, or the American Society for Testing and Materials, is a non-profit organization devoted solely to developing and writing standards for materials, products, systems and services. It consists of experts in various fields of science, engineering, consulting, government, academics and others. ASTM was organized in 1893 and has a considerable reputation worldwide.

Since there is wide acceptance in industry for using ASTM standard for describing and reporting specifications and test results, it is important to do so for roof coatings. Many tests have been and continue to be used to measure coating performance, i.e. tensile strength, elongation, etc. Unfortunately, in most cases, there are more than one test that may apply for a given characteristic and this inevitably leads to some confusion when comparing test data.

From its beginning in 1976 SUNLIFE has always strived to make the best performing products possible. In addition, to date, testing has been an integral part of insuring that our products stay at the top of the market.

Recently a new ASTM standard was produced for the roof coatings industry. It is known as ASTM D-6083. Rather than an individual test, it consists of a battery of tests critical to determining roof coating performance. To meet the standard, a coating has to pass all of the tests within the standard. In other words, there is finally a comprehensive standard for the industry that allows a consumer to better compare roof coatings. A roof coating that meets the standard performs better than one that has not. This also clears up a lot of the confusion from years past when trying to compare test data.
